Free verse:
The Enemy
What if
After all this time
After all the stories
And worry
The enemy
Did not carry a pitchfork
And have two horns
And a tail
What if they did not carry a scythe
And have sunken eyes
And a black robe
What if they did not come in a saucer
And have green skin
And three eyes
What if they did not clink with every step
And have a metal body
And a metal heart
What if they did not come from beyond
And hobble about
And crave flesh
But rather
What if they wore a suit
And tie
Or carried a briefcase
Or a folder
Of important-looking documents
And smiled
As they passed you by?
After all this time
After all the stories
And worry
The enemy
Did not carry a pitchfork
And have two horns
And a tail
What if they did not carry a scythe
And have sunken eyes
And a black robe
What if they did not come in a saucer
And have green skin
And three eyes
What if they did not clink with every step
And have a metal body
And a metal heart
What if they did not come from beyond
And hobble about
And crave flesh
But rather
What if they wore a suit
And tie
Or carried a briefcase
Or a folder
Of important-looking documents
And smiled
As they passed you by?
